One ring a day. Close it, and every word in it stays yours.

Most German learners don’t run out of grammar.

They run out of words.

You can’t understand what you don’t recognise, and you can’t say what you can’t remember. Vocabulary is what turns the German you’ve studied into German you can use. Recall is built to grow yours fast, and to make sure none of it slips away.

How it works

From first sight to second nature.

  1. 1Find the word.

Search in German or English. Every meaning comes back with its gender, plural and forms, in the order Germans actually use them, and you can hear it spoken.

  2. 2Save it in one tap.

It goes into a Word Bank with real example sentences, its translation and a schedule of its own. No flashcards to write, ever.

  3. 3Make it yours.

Practise in real sentences: fill the gap, type it from the English, or hear it and pick the meaning. The English is always right there, and every answer teaches you something.

AI tutor

A German tutor in your pocket, whenever you’re stuck.

Ask anything about a word, a sentence or a grammar point, in plain English. Recall’s tutor is an AI that knows German inside out. It looks words up in Recall’s dictionary before it answers, so you get the real meaning, real examples and a rule you’ll actually remember.

  • “Why this word, and not that one?”

kennen or wissen, erfahren or erleben: get the difference in one clear answer, with examples.

  • “Can I say it like this?”

Try your own sentence and find out whether a German would say it, and what they’d say instead.

  • “Why was I wrong?”

Miss a word in practice and ask why, right there. The tutor already has your sentence in front of it.

Why it works

Built on how memory actually works.

Recall uses spaced repetition, one of the most proven methods in learning science. Every time you pull a word back out of memory, it gets harder to forget, and the gaps between reviews grow as it sticks: days, then weeks, then months. Recall tracks how well you know every single word and times each review so it counts. Words you know well fade into the background. Words you’re shaky on come back sooner.

One word, two years

Chance you’d remember it

How the memory of one word holds up with Recall and without it, for a word you get right each time. Practice falls on days 0, 2, 13, 59, 222 and 720, from Recall’s scheduler at its standard settings.

Questions

Good to know.

What is Recall?

Recall is a German vocabulary app for English speakers, for iPhone. It combines a German–English dictionary, an AI tutor and spaced repetition, so you can find new words, understand them properly and remember them for good.

How is it different from a flashcard app?

You never make a card. Save a word and its meanings, forms, example sentences and practice come with it. When something doesn’t make sense, you can ask the tutor.

What can the AI tutor do?

It answers your questions about German words and sentences in plain English: the difference between two similar words, whether a sentence sounds natural, or why an answer in practice was wrong. It looks words up in Recall’s dictionary before it answers, and shows real example sentences with their translations.

Why does spaced repetition work?

Every time you pull a word back out of memory, it becomes harder to forget, especially when some time has passed. Recall spaces your practice so each review counts, and the gaps grow as a word sticks: days, then weeks, then months.

How long does it take each day?

As long as today’s ring. Home shows how many words are due and roughly how long they’ll take. The more words you save, the bigger the ring. Recall never hands out a fixed quota.

What level of German do I need?

Any. You save the words you meet, so Recall grows with what you read and hear. You pick the line that describes your German, and practice sentences are chosen to match it.

Which languages does it teach?

German, for English speakers.

When can I get it?

Recall is coming soon to the App Store for iPhone. It’s in testing with early learners now.
